Renault 5 GT Turbo-21 years after…..still going STRONG!
Who remembers when the Renault 5 GT Turbo first came out? Everyone fell in love with it. One of those people was my dad. My dad has always been a fan of Renault. His first ever Renault was a Renault 16 Ts & followed by 2 more Renault 16 Tx’s, then he went through a faze of Renault Fuego’s (and he also still has one in his possession, we tease him and call it the “Dinosaur”).
The first time he saw a GT Turbo was when driving passed Hyde Park, London. It was parked up and it had French number plates on it. He fell in love on the spot so it wasn’t long before dad went to his usual Renault dealer and placed his order. Mum went straight for the Pearl White and it wasn’t long before they came home with one. A few months later he purchased another one in Black. This particular one was slightly different. It had a long sunroof and was also tuned! And then he purchased a third in Grey.
This year his Turbo is celebrating its 21st birthday and the only thing different on it, is the grill. He still drives it from time to time and I even take it for a spin once in a while. We get stopped a LOT whilst driving the car, everybody wants to buy it. To date the car is in “Top Mint Condition” as we would say back in the UK. The mileage is just over 70,000. It’s a great pleasure driving the Turbo it’s a small but powerful little car. Over the years I have tried convincing my dad to change it up a bit, you know like kit it up a bit, put different rims on it but his answer is always he same “what for, keep it original”. I guess that’s what makes it stand out even more!
We grew up in Hackney, London and everyone in our area back then knew Dad for his cars. He was forever cleaning them and he hasn’t changed.
His Renault Fuego, his Renault Laguna and the Renault GT Turbo. All three of them are spotless and are cleaned daily inside and out.
To me this particular car (R5 GT Turbo) is a “Classic” I just love it and would just like to wish it a Happy 21st Birthday!
